    Karl Pearson and the Galtonian Tradition: Studies in the Rise of Quantitative Social Biology.

    This work discusses the growth of a 'Galtonian tradition' in Science, notably as developed by Karl Pearson and his colleagues. It traces the development from Galton's ideas,in Britain, of the disciplines of Statistics,Biometrical Genetics and the Psychology of individual differences. These developments were linked with a number of philosophical and ideological commitments on the parts of the scientists concerned, and the work examines the interplay between these commitments and the theorising of the scientists.It looks also at the relations that may have held between these commitments and the social milieux of the scientists. Particular attention is given to the role of the strong and influential Eugenics movement which flourished in Britain at the time of these developments

    Conductivity Imaging in Plates Using Current Injection Tomography

    The task of reconstructing an unknown distribution of electrical conductivity is widely recognized as a central theoretical problem in eddy-current nondestructive evaluation [1]. Rather than using an eddy-current method, we address this problem using DC injection of current into conductive materials. Experimental methods of the magnetic imaging of injected currents using high-resolution SQUID magnetometers have been described elsewhere [2]. In this paper we describe a tomographic method for using magnetically-imaged, injected currents to reconstruct distributions of electrical conductivity. Much of what we describe should also be applicable to data obtained using uniform colinear eddy currents induced by means of planar sheet inducers [4, 5]

    Validation of methods for converting the original Disease Activity Score (DAS) to the DAS28

    © The Author(s) 2018.The Disease Activity Score (DAS) is integral in tailoring the clinical management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and is an important measure in clinical research. Different versions have been developed over the years to improve reliability and ease of use. Combining the original DAS and the newer DAS28 data in both contemporary and historical studies is important for both primary and secondary data analyses. As such, a methodologically robust means of converting the old DAS to the new DAS28 measure would be invaluable. Using data from The Early RA Study (ERAS), a sub-sample of patients with both DAS and DAS28 data were used to develop new regression imputation formulas using the total DAS score (univariate), and using the separate components of the DAS score (multivariate). DAS were transformed to DAS28 using an existing formula quoted in the literature, and the newly developed formulas. Bland and Altman plots were used to compare the transformed DAS with the recorded DAS28 to ascertain levels of agreement. The current transformation formula tended to overestimate the true DAS28 score, particularly at the higher end of the scale. A formula which uses all separate components of the DAS was found to estimate the scores with a higher level of precision. A new formula is proposed that can be used by other early RA cohorts to convert the original DAS to DAS28.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Feasibility randomized-controlled trial of online acceptance and commitment therapy for painful peripheral neuropathy in people living with HIV: The OPEN study

    Background Neuropathic pain negatively affects quality of life among people living with HIV (PLWH). This study examined the feasibility of conducting a full‐scale randomized‐controlled trial of online acceptance and commitment therapy (“ACT OPEN”) for neuropathic pain in PLWH. Methods Using a parallel‐groups design, thirty‐eight participants were randomized to ACT OPEN or a waitlist control (2:1). Participants completed standard self‐report outcome measures at baseline, and two‐ and five‐months post‐randomization. Participants were aware of their allocation, but assessment was blinded. Results Twenty‐five participants were randomized to ACT OPEN and 13 to the control (of 133 referrals). ACT OPEN completion was 69% and two‐month trial retention was 82%. Treatment credibility and satisfaction scores for ACT OPEN were comparable to scores reported in previous trials of cognitive‐behavioural treatments for pain. Four adverse events were reported during the study, including one serious adverse event; all of these were unrelated to the research procedures. Small to moderate effects and 95% confidence intervals suggest that the true effect may favour ACT OPEN for improvements in pain intensity/interference and depression. Conclusions A full‐scale RCT of online ACT for pain management in PLWH may be feasible with refinements to trial design to facilitate recruitment. Significance Research on pain management in people living with HIV has primarily focused on pharmacological treatments with limited success. This is the first study to show the potential feasibility of a psychological treatment based on acceptance and commitment therapy delivered online and tailored for pain management in people with HIV (“ACT OPEN”). ACT OPEN may be a promising treatment in this population and further evaluation in a full‐scale randomized‐controlled trial appears warranted.     Copyright @ 2007 AMSThe Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP) is an international project to understand precisely where, when, and how convective clouds form and develop into showers in the mainly maritime environment of southern England. A major aim of CSIP is to compare the results of the very high resolution Met Office weather forecasting model with detailed observations of the early stages of convective clouds and to use the newly gained understanding to improve the predictions of the model. A large array of ground-based instruments plus two instrumented aircraft, from the U.K. National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the German Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK), Karlsruhe, were deployed in southern England, over an area centered on the meteorological radars at Chilbolton, during the summers of 2004 and 2005. In addition to a variety of ground-based remote-sensing instruments, numerous rawin-sondes were released at one- to two-hourly intervals from six closely spaced sites. The Met Office weather radar network and Meteosat satellite imagery were used to provide context for the observations made by the instruments deployed during CSIP. This article presents an overview of the CSIP field campaign and examples from CSIP of the types of convective initiation phenomena that are typical in the United Kingdom. It shows the way in which certain kinds of observational data are able to reveal these phenomena and gives an explanation of how the analyses of data from the field campaign will be used in the development of an improved very high resolution NWP model for operational use.This work is funded by the National Environment Research Council following an initial award from the HEFCE Joint Infrastructure Fund

    Can ultrasound be used to stimulate nerve tissue?

    BACKGROUND: The stimulation of nerve or cortical tissue by magnetic induction is a relatively new tool for the non-invasive study of the brain and nervous system. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), for example, has been used for the functional mapping of the motor cortex and may have potential for treating a variety of brain disorders. METHODS AND RESULTS: A new method of stimulating active tissue is proposed by propagating ultrasound in the presence of a magnetic field. Since tissue is conductive, particle motion created by an ultrasonic wave will induce an electric current density generated by Lorentz forces. An analytical derivation is given for the electric field distribution induced by a collimated ultrasonic beam. An example shows that peak electric fields of up to 8 V/m appear to be achievable at the upper range of diagnostic intensities. This field strength is about an order of magnitude lower than fields typically associated with TMS; however, the electric field gradients induced by ultrasound can be quite high (about 60 kV/m(2 )at 4 MHz), which theoretically play a more important role in activation than the field magnitude. The latter value is comparable to TMS-induced gradients. CONCLUSION: The proposed method could be used to locally stimulate active tissue by inducing an electric field in regions where the ultrasound is focused. Potential advantages of this method compared to TMS is that stimulation of cortical tissue could be highly localized as well as achieved at greater depths in the brain than is currently possible with TMS

    Strong expression of ID1 protein is associated with decreased survival, increased expression of ephrin-A1/EPHA2, and reduced thrombospondin-1 in malignant melanoma

    The ID1 protein, an inhibitor of basic helix–loop–helix transcription factors, has been involved in multiple cellular processes including cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. To evaluate the importance of ID1 in malignant melanoma, tumour cell expression was examined by immunohistochemistry in 119 cases of nodular melanoma using tissue microarray technique, and related to multiple tumour markers including proliferation, p16 expression, angiogenesis and patient survival. Strong ID1 expression was significantly associated with increased tumour thickness, and significantly reduced survival. Also, increased ID1 was associated with loss of thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) expression, a known inhibitor of angiogenesis, and increased intensity of ephrin-A1 and its receptor EPHA2. Presence of BRAF mutations was related to strong ID1 expression, but there was no relationship with p16 protein expression. Further, no significant correlation was found between ID1 and microvessel density. In conclusion, our study supports a significant role of the ID1 protein in melanoma progression and patient prognosis. The absence of correlation with p16 protein expression and angiogenesis suggests that other regulatory pathways and mechanisms might be influenced by ID1 in melanomas. An inverse relation between ID1 and TSP-1 expression support an important role of ID1 in the regulation of this complex multitarget protein

    Duration and determinants of birth interval among women of child bearing age in Southern Ethiopia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Longer intervals between consecutive births decrease the number of children a woman can have. This results in beneficial effects on population size and on the health status of mothers and children. Therefore, understanding the practice of birth interval and its determinants is helpful to design evidence based strategies for interventions. The objective of this study was to determine duration and determinants of birth interval among women of child bearing age in Lemo district, southern Ethiopia in March 2010.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A community based cross sectional study design with stratified multistage sampling technique was employed. A sample of 844 women of child bearing age were selected by using simple random sampling technique after complete census was conducted in selected kebeles prior to data collection. Structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Actual birth interval was measured with the respondents' memory since majority of the women or their children in the area had no birth certificate.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Majority (57%) of women were practicing short birth interval length with the median birth interval length of 33 months. Actual birth interval length is significantly shorter than preferred birth interval length. Birth interval showed significant variation by contraceptive use, residence, wealth index, breast feeding and occupation of husbands.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>low proportion of optimal birth spacing practices with short actual birth interval length and longer preferred birth interval lengths were evident among the study subjects. Hence interventions to enhance contraceptive utilization behaviors among women in Lemo district would be helpful to narrow the gap between optimal and actual birth spacing.</p

    vProtein: Identifying Optimal Amino Acid Complements from Plant-Based Foods

    Background: Indispensible amino acids (IAAs) are used by the body in different proportions. Most animal-based foods provide these IAAs in roughly the needed proportions, but many plant-based foods provide different proportions of IAAs. To explore how these plant-based foods can be better used in human nutrition, we have created the computational tool vProtein to identify optimal food complements to satisfy human protein needs. Methods: vProtein uses 1251 plant-based foods listed in the United States Department of Agriculture standard release 22 database to determine the quantity of each food or pair of foods required to satisfy human IAA needs as determined by the 2005 daily recommended intake. The quantity of food in a pair is found using a linear programming approach that minimizes total calories, total excess IAAs, or the total weight of the combination. Results: For single foods, vProtein identifies foods with particularly balanced IAA patterns such as wheat germ, quinoa, and cauliflower. vProtein also identifies foods with particularly unbalanced IAA patterns such as macadamia nuts, degermed corn products, and wakame seaweed. Although less useful alone, some unbalanced foods provide unusually good complements, such as Brazil nuts to legumes. Interestingly, vProtein finds no statistically significant bias toward grain/ legume pairings for protein complementation. These analyses suggest that pairings of plant-based foods should be based on the individual foods themselves instead of based on broader food group-food group pairings. Overall, the most efficien
